Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A tall bust of Xipe Totec, "The Flayed One", with an open mouth, wide eyes, and a very well-sculpted nose. The bust appears made to be placed over something else, or possibly to have offerings placed into its open mouth and flow down into something through its flared base. This god was meant to express the regeneration of the agricultural cycle. Size: 4.45" W x 9.75" H (11.3 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
