Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A set of 3 hand-built pottery artifacts including 2 anthropomorphic figures and a portrait jar. The first figure is of attenuated size exhibiting painted breasts and flared nostrils, and the larger figure presents in a seated pose with thick red tattooing stripes across her face and body. The portrait vessel features a minimalist face on the front with surfaces adorned with red and black pigment. Size of largest: 2.5" L x 3.125" W x 6" H (6.4 cm x 7.9 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA collection, acquired 1969 to 1970; ex-Dr. Jorge Lineas, San Jose, Costa Rica

  • Condition: Repair to one leg of shorter figure as well as neckline of larger figure, each with small chip and light adhesive residue along break lines; vessel with small chip near bottom of face. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to overall forms.
