Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A set of hand-built pottery tripod bowls, each with a series of intricate linear decorations across the exterior surfaces. The first bowl features a cream-hued ground with red and black motifs, and each hollow leg still retains the petite rattle balls held within. The larger bowl exhibits a russet-hued ground adorned with white pigment in elaborate lines, and each zoomorphic foot bears an upturned snout in front of circular eyes. Size of largest: 9.5" W x 5.125" H (24.1 cm x 13 cm)

Provenance: private Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA collection, acquired 1969 to 1970; ex-Dr. Jorge Lineas, San Jose, Costa Rica

  • Condition: Larger bowl with repair to legs, and second bowl repaired from multiple pieces. Each vessel with small chips, light abrasions, and fading to pigment, otherwise in nice condition. Great remains of original pigment throughout.
