**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fine set of two hand-built pottery female figures known as 'pretty ladies' based on their stylized feminine forms, each holding sinuous arms across their breasts. The first figure wears a circular medallion on a necklace and features dramatically slanted eyes beneath thick brows and a centrally parted coiffure. The larger figure has delineated hands, a thick necklace, circular earrings, offset eyes, and a horizontally striated coiffure, all with faint red pigment accents. Size: 1.6" W x 2.9" H (4.1 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

  • Condition: Both figures have light encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and preservation to overall form. Larger figure has faint remains of red pigment across some obverse areas.
