Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to Republic Period, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A pair of porcelain blue-on white seal paste containers, both circular with matching lids. The underside of both is stamped with four-character Qianlong reign mark in kaishu script, but probably from a later date of manufacture. The lids on both are slightly relief molded, one painted with dragons, the other with a mountain landscape, and a man crossing a bridge. These jars once held a special paste made from special ingredients ground into a fine powder then mixed with oil into a colored paste that is used to ink seals - usually a red color used by scholar-officials. Size: 2.75" Diameter x 1" H (7 cm x 2.5 cm)
