Description:

East Asia, Japanese, Edo to Meiji Era, ca. 19th century CE. A wood mask of a Bodhisattva, probably Sho Kannon (Guanyin), the goddess of kindness, compassion, and mercy - the equivalent of Avalokitesvara. She has a soft and rounded face - jowly cheeks and plump chin- serene, with heavy lidded eyes and a small mouth set in a neutral but calm expression. The eyes are pierced for the wearer to see through and a wire is threaded through the suspension holes. Buddhist masks such as this were worn during ritual processions, to honor the deities. Size: 9.75" L x 6" W (24.8 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982
