Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast, Senufo culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of wooden heddle pulleys, each showcasing a unique design. One is simplistic, featuring an attached raffia cord for suspension, with the dowel and rotating wheel still intact. The larger pulley is slightly more decorative, adorned with incised linear motifs and a spherical finial. These pulleys were integral components of narrow band looms, used to raise and lower the heddle, thereby separating warp threads to allow the shuttle to pass through. Beyond their functional role, heddle pulleys were often intricately carved, reflecting the weaver's pride in their craft and serving as a source of inspiration and delight as they hung at eye level during work. Size of larger: 2.5" L x 1.25" W x 7" H (6.4 cm x 3.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
