Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lwalwa (or Lwalu) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This wooden carving depicts a stylized standing figure, with white kaolin accentuating an angular, rhomboid-shaped face. The figure has an elongated nasal ridge and etched eyes and mouth. The verso of the head features a conical tip. Lwalwa masks and figural carvings are characterized by geometric designs with sharply angled planes and smooth, often unadorned surfaces. Figures like this are rare and are believed to play a significant role in important rituals, particularly those associated with initiation societies and circumcision ceremonies for young people reaching adulthood. Size: 2.25" L x 1.5" W x 8.75" H (5.7 cm x 3.8 cm x 22.2 cm); 9.125" H (23.2 cm) on included custom stand.
