Description:

Central America, Guatemala, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden slingshots (known as ondilla in Spanish). The shorter slingshot depicts a recumbent lion with a slender body, hind legs extended behind its posterior, a leonine face, and forelegs with pierced strap holes. The taller slingshot shows a skeleton standing atop an integral rectangular plinth and holding a lengthy knife in one bent arm. Exposed ribs and clavicle bones denote the figure's lack of flesh, and the rounded skull is topped with a pair of three-pronged strap hooks. Size of largest (skeleton): 1.6" W x 6.3" H (4.1 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: ex-House of Ancestors collection; ex-private Galisteo, New Mexico, USA collection
