Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, proto-Viking / Viking / Kievan Rus culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. Three round, cast white bronze mirrors of similar form, with one side shiny and undecorated, the other with abstract relief decoration, and a diminutive raised handle in the center. Each handle is pierced for attachment or suspension, suggesting that these were carried on a belt or worn in some other way. Aside from the placement of the handle, these are very similar in form to the flat, one-sided bracteate medals of the Migration Period. Mirrors are relatively rare finds from this culture, but are often linked to both women's burials and royalty. Size of a single mirror (all are close in size): 2.55" W (6.5 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) displayed together on included custom stand.
