Northern Europe, Viking / Norse, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A matching ensemble of jewelry made with carnelian beads, brought from India and Iran to the Viking world. Carnelian beads were highly prized by Vikings, and are known from the graves of high status women, like the one found from ca. 875 to 900 CE in Saffron Walden, southeastern England. This collection includes a pair of earrings, each with a long, teardrop-shaped bead and a round bead on a modern sterling silver finding; a bracelet composed of three elongated beads and four round ones, on a sterling silver chain; and a necklace with fourteen elongated beads and eighteen round beads, strung in a symmetrical pattern on a sterling silver chain. Four large beads, strung horizonally, form a pendant on the necklace. Necklace is 16.5" L (41.9 cm); bracelet is 6" L (15.2 cm); each earring is 2.2" L (5.6 cm)
