Description:

Greece, probably Tanagra, Boeotia, Hellenstic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A trio of heads from the naturalistic tradition of pottery that is best known from Tanagra, where figurines like the ones that had these for heads have been found in the hundreds. The majority of these figures depict fashionable women, as shown here - three heads with sensitive faces, one with an elaborate coiffure, the other two wearing distinctive petasoi, broad-brimmed hats that were made of felted wool, leather, or straw. Figures like these represented a break in tradition from earlier small statuary, which had a religious function - these instead present a world of mortal women, perhaps originating from the New Comedy of Menander. Size of largest: 1.3" W x 1.75" H (3.3 cm x 4.4 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.
