Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 300 BCE. An attractive footed pottery cup, with a small arched strap handle joining neck to shoulder. The rim flares outward at the top; the round foot has a series of rolled steps that indicate the incredible attention to detail on this vessel. The bulbous body displays thinly-grooved lines across the circumference, which are framed by a pinched neck line above and two incised horizontal concentric lines below. A highly-reflective black glaze covers most exterior and all interior surfaces, though the original terracotta color is still visible just above the foot and on the underside of the cup itself. Size: 3.5" W x 3.75" H (8.9 cm x 9.5 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
