Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A wonderful group of hand-carved stone axe heads used to shape and smooth a variety of different materials. The smallest axe, made from a mottled brown stone, has a planar bottom side and a rounded handle. The medium-sized stone, made of a mottled dark-brown stone, has a large rounded handle, a full groove around the neck, and a large head with no edge. The largest and most intact stone is formed from a mottled brown stone with lighter inclusions and has a tapered handle, a full groove, and two broad faces which taper to a rough edge. Size of largest (most-intact): 6.125" L x 3.25" H (15.6 cm x 8.3 cm).

  • Condition: Both the smallest and medium-sized stones have losses to axe heads, portions of handles, and grooves. All items have surface wear commensurate with age and use as expected, with some surface roughness and small chips to faces, edges, and handles. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
