Description:

North America, late Cretaceous Period, ca. 68 to 66 million years ago. A fascinating piece of dinosaur skeletal anatomy, this is an epijugal, an armored cheek plate. This example appears to be from a mature adult dinosaur, as in youth the epijugal is not fused, and this epijugal has an area that looks like it was connected to the rest of the skull. It is from a member of the triceratops genus, a group of herbivore dinosaurs with three horns on their distinctive armored skulls. First found just west of Denver, Colorado 1887, these large animals were initially mistaken for a form of bison before scientists realized that they represented a type of dinosaur known as a Ceratopsian. The triceratops skull was heavy and distinctive: with three horns, a parrot-like beak, and a frill that could reach three feet wide, it was one of the largest skulls known from any land animal. Size: 6.15" W x 4.5" H (15.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
