North America, found in Pennington County, South Dakota, Oligocene, ca. 30 million years ago. A fine example of a fossilized oreodont skull from Merycoidodon culbertsoni, including 24 teeth, with three of the original canines well preserved. Oreodont, meaning "mountain teeth", is an extinct family of cud-chewing animals with short, snub faces and large canine teeth. In life, these animals would have been similar in shape and lifestyle to hogs, though they could grow to the size of modern cattle. Size: 7.6" W x 4.55" H (19.3 cm x 11.6 cm)
