Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Toltec / Aztec, ca. 9th to 14th century CE. A pecked and carved pounder or pestle tool, made from a volcanic rock, with a flattened pounding face and a decorative finial. The carved being has lost some of the finer details from age and use, but appears to be a human head with arms held to its face when viewed from the front, and from the sides it looks like a bird with folded wings- perhaps a hybrid or transformation figure. Size: 3" Diameter x 7" H (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
