Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A seated solid pottery figure wearing a mask, depicted with a topknot headdress and pierced eyes; posed so that her/his arms rest on upraised knees. The sex of the figure is not clear - Tlatilco artists generally depicted women instead of men, but male figures are usually the ones wearing masks. Some traces of red and white pigment remain on the surface. Size: 1.45" L x 1.6" W x 3.25" H (3.7 cm x 4.1 cm x 8.3 cm)

Tlatilco is known for its unique figurines, in dynamic, lifelike poses, found in great quantities in their tombs. This culture was contemporary with the Olmec, but the artistic style is completely different, and is also not replicated by cultures that came after them.

Compare to a similar example in "The Jaguar's Children: Pre-Classic Central Mexico" by Coe, Michael D. NY Museum of Primitive Art, 1965.

Provenance: Ex-J. Cobb collection, 1960's
