Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved wood mask depicting a popular mustachioed and bearded character from the Topeng dance drama of East Java with wonderful detailing in both low and high relief, painted in hues of green, gold, yellow, teal, red, peachy pink, black, and white. Created for use with eye slits, nose and mouth perforations for the performer. The Topeng dance originated in the 15th century in Bali and Java. It is a dance drama in which performers wear elaborate costumes and masks and engage in a storytelling dance accompanied by music. The dancers play the roles of various messenger gods associated with predominantly nature and ancestral spirits. Size: 8"L x 6-1/4"W
