Tibet, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A Tibetan bronze prayer/incense burner adorned with two long panels, two circular end panels, and even a panel on the underside of cloissone decoration comprised of lotus/floral motifs in hues of turquoise, cobalt blue, green, orange, pink, yellow, and white with black linear outlines. The ornate bronzework reveals masterful technique with copious embellishments. In particular, the highly detailed removable lid features two mystical creatures facing a central finial. When in use, the intricate openwork of this lid will produce the effect of incense smoke is coming out of the creature's mouths. The underside panel also includes a chop with characters, perhaps a signature, in bronze. Size: 12-1/4" x 5-1/2".
In Buddhism, incense burners, or censers, are used in all Buddhist cultures and denominations. The burning of incense takes place both in the home and in the temple, and serves as an offering to the Buddha or various deities. It is also an important ritual act that is believed to clear the air of evil spirits.
