Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine) culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. Three hand-coiled shallow bowls made from sumac or willow coils and stitched with splints of dyed yucca. Each has a pointed star pattern which is often gifted at weddings and symbolic of creation stories, and the outer rim is finished with a herringbone / false braid. Note the break in the color bands of the central pattern - known as a sipapu (shipapu) - forming a path from the outer rim and terminal coil into the center to symbolize the connection to ancestors. The colored bands are rainclouds and the sun, and the outermost rim is the current generation of people. The sipapu path is the connection between past and present peoples, and the bowl should be orientated with the path facing to the east, towards the rising sun. Size of largest: 14" L x 5" H (35.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
