Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 200 to 600 CE. At Teotihuacan, the most important metropolis of the Classic period, wonderful carved cylinders such as this would have been a somewhat common sight. Gray, slightly corseted cylindrical body upon three slab legs, surface carved in deep relief with twin images of Quetzalcoatl (Maya Kukulcan) - the famous/infamous feathered serpent. He is carved in profile with lower jaw facing to the left, oval eyes with scrolled pupil, fangs and upper teeth, entirety ringed with feathered. To one side - between the serpents - is a glyphoid/tassel that stretches between the top and bottom of the cylinder. This is a very fine and rare representation of this important Meso-American deity. Size: 4.5625" W x 5.75" H (11.6 cm x 14.6 cm)

Per Britannic - Quetzalcóatl, Mayan name Kukulcán, (from Nahuatl quetzalli, "tail feather of the quetzal bird [Pharomachrus mocinno]," and coatl, "snake"), the Feathered Serpent, one of the major deities of the ancient Mexican pantheon. Representations of a feathered snake occur as early as the Teotihuacán civilization (3rd to 8th century CE) on the central plateau. At that time Quetzalcóatl seems to have been conceived as a vegetation god - an earth and water deity closely associated with the rain god Tlaloc.
