Description:

Ancient Mediterranean, Phoenicia or Carthage, ca. 4th to 2nd century BCE. A tall and slender transport amphora with a tapered base and a missile-shaped body, hence the "torpedo" designation. A pair of suspension loops project out from the shoulder while the grooved shoulder is surmounted by a squat rim that was perhaps plugged with a stopper made from pitch or plaster. Torpedo amphorae were used throughout the ancient Mediterranean as a space-saving means of transporting large amounts of materials such as wine, oil, or various foodstuffs.
