Southeast Asia, Burma and eastern India, Naga, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-built leather war shield of tall form covered in dark dye with painted linear decorations. The concave rectangular shield features a sturdy form with a vertical crest, and a pair of wrapped rattan handles on the verso enable it to be raised in front of the warrior. Adorning the front is a series of orange-yellow stripes forming abstract mountains and solar motifs to either side of a central chevron-filled ladder, perhaps representing water. Size: 17.75" W x 38.125" H (45.1 cm x 96.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Slight bending to overall form, with abrasions to dye and pigment, minor loosening to rattan handles, abrasions to edges and corners, tearing and creasing to some frontal areas commensurate with age and use, and some abraded surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Sturdy form and motifs still visible.
