Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Zuni tribe, ca. mid 20th century CE. A handsomely carved and brightly painted wooden kachina doll featuring a long, beak-like nose, big, paddle-like ears, and an applied yarn collar. The kachina also has painted details on the face, hands, and chest, as well as a fabric skirt and a necklace made of yarn with a profusion of turquoise fragments applied to it. Kachina figures are meant as gifts for children representing kachina dancers and the supernatural kachina beings they embody, and are part of the Pueblo tradition, which includes the Hopi and the Zuni tribes. This figure may be a Sha'lak'o dancer, one of the messengers of the gods who participates in the sacred winter ceremony of the same name and comes dressed in a bird mask. Size: 13" W x 17.9" H (33 cm x 45.5 cm)
