Description:

West Africa, Mali, Bambara (sometimes Bamana) peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden nude figure of a sizable form standing atop delineated legs and broad feet. Dozens of hammered circles adorn the arms, shoulders, abdomen and verso, and incised rings encircle the neck. The bulbous head boasts a sunken face with a broad nose, miniscule eyes, a slit-form mouth, cupped ears, and tapered cheeks beneath a smooth top. Dark-brown pigment covers most areas of the figure and imbues it with depth and character. Size: 8.25" W x 34.7" H (21 cm x 88.1 cm); 36.3" H (92.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repairs to back of right leg and left foot, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Fill material along body and neck to stabilize long fissures, with overpainting along new material. Light abrasions to body, limbs, and head, with fading to some finer details, wear to pigmentation in some raised areas, and light encrustations within some recessed areas. Light earthen deposits throughout.
