West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden stool with a single front leg, a pair of back legs, a shield-shaped seat, and a stylized anthropomorphic head projecting from the verso that doubles as a handle. The head is defined by wide ovoid eyes, a slender aquiline nose, full lips, cupped ears, and smooth cheeks, all beneath an incised crescent-shaped brow line and a smooth coiffure. Beautiful brown patina envelops the entire composition. Size: 8.4" W x 9" H (21.3 cm x 22.9 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
