Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, possibly 18th century CE. This is a standing wooden Buddha in the Ayutthaya style; he has been painted with black lacquer. The Ayutthaya Kingdom lasted from 1351 to 1767 and during the 16th century was regarded as one of the largest and wealthiest trading centers in the East. Buddha images of the Ayutthaya period display the influence of Lopburi, U Thong and Sukhothai styles, almost certainly because of the kingdom's extensive trading contacts with those places. Standing images from this period are often in the Abhaya Mudra, the gesture of "dispelling fear"; although the arms are missing, the placement of their stumps suggest that this piece was displaying that mudra. Size: 44-1/4"H x 11-1/2"W x 6-1/2"L (112 cm x 29 cm x 16-1/2 cm) + custom stand.
