Description:

East Asia, Taiwan, Paiwan culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden storage box featuring a brass keyhole. The hinged lid and sides are adorned with low-relief carvings of stylized figures and faces, including a single forward-facing figure wearing a headdress on the lid. These motifs likely serve as protective talismans or invoke ancestral spirits, bridging the material and spiritual realms. It is possible that this box was used by shamans to hold objects for divination rites. The box itself was considered a "throne" for the ritualistic items placed within. Size: 12.5" L x 5.5" W x 4.5" H (31.8 cm x 14 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Eureka, California, USA collection, acquired via inheritance, originally collected while traveling in the 1920s
