Description:

East Asia, China, Qing to Republic era, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A cylindrical thumb ring carved from creamy white stone, with sides adorned in seal script, an ancient and formal style of Chinese characters. Although often labeled as archer's rings, pieces like this are believed to be only modeled after the simpler, functional archery rings. The raised and etched motifs on such decorative rings would likely hinder the smooth release of a bowstring, suggesting that these were more symbolic accessories rather than utilitarian objects. They were often worn on cords or belts, serving as status symbols rather than for archery. Size: 1.2" Diameter x 1.25" L (3 cm x 3.2 cm)
