Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 10th to 16th century CE. A carved llama or deer bone ritual vomit stick with a skillfully-executed figural finial who stands with hands meeting over his abdomen. His form presents angular shoulders, openwork areas between his arms and slender torso as well as his legs, a tranquil face with almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, a closed mouth, and a bob-like coiffure. The figure stands upright, his feet with delineated toes. Ritual vomit sticks like this example were traditionally used for spiritual rituals. A hallucinogenic substance was ingested and then forcefully purged to induce profound visions. Size: 7.5" L x 0.7" W (19 cm x 1.8 cm)
