Description:

Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Amazon River estuary, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A lovely terracotta vase decorated with a cream slip, its surface wrapped in an intricate incised design highlighted with red-brown mineral pigment. This design is repeated in four horizontal bands, each divided into square panels by double-ended arrows; each panel contains a spiral-shaped motif with colorful dots. The interior of the vessel is fully colored with that same red-brown, creating a nice contrast with the cream exterior. The Marajoara - also known as the Marajo - flourished on Marajo Island, in the mouth of the Amazon River. They built impressive mounds and lived subsistence lifestyles while producing stylistically unique, beautiful pottery like this example. Size: 5.25" W x 5.55" H (13.3 cm x 14.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Eugene Lions collection, Switzerland, before 1970
