Description:

Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino or Ciboney peoples, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A slender celt of teardrop or elongated petaloid form with convex faces and an impressively thin blade edge, all hand-carved from dark green, nearly black stone. The celt in Taino culture was the blade component of a ceremonial hatchet-form tool called a "manaya." The Yoruba African people that the Spanish brought as slaves to the Caribbean found these stones in fields and linked them to the Yoruba deity Shango (sometimes Chango) because of their thunderbolt shape. Size: 7" L x 1.7" W (17.8 cm x 4.3 cm)
