Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 2200 to 1900 BCE. An enticing, hand-built pottery figure of Astarte - known as Ishtar in parts of Mesopotamia - the goddess associated with femininity, war, and motherhood. Adorned with black-painted stripes, the avian-esque figure presents with a tubular body draped in a floor-length flared robe, as she stretches her arms outwards to resemble wings. Her stylized visage displays a beak-like nose flanked by applied eyes and surmounted by a prominent crest. Size: 3" W x 3.1" H (7.6 cm x 7.9 cm)
