Description:

Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2500 to 1800 BCE. A rather unusual handbuilt terracotta figure of the goddess Astarte. She stands atop fused legs - her limbs and pubic triangle skillfully incised - with arms crossed and delineated in bas relief above her wide hips and belly button, round breasts with delineated nipples, and a most intriguing visage with a banded headdress that covers her eyes, prominent full lips, and a long pierced coiffure that falls to her shoulders. Astarte is the goddess who is also known as Ishtar in some parts of Mesopotamia and is associated with femininity, motherhood, and war. Size: 2.45" W x 6.5" H (6.2 cm x 16.5 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
