Description:

Eurasia, perhaps Scythian or similar, ca. 6th to 4th century BCE. A thin ovoid cast bronze mirror with a low, rolled rim and a long, thin handle with a ring-shaped loop at its lower tip. One side is decorated with a low relief, profile image of a horse. The animal is depicted as powerful, with a broad, muscular body and a particularly powerful neck, a stylized mane flowing its back. The other side is smooth and would have once been polished. Interestingly, rather than being a perfect ovoid, the upper part of the mirror has a tiny, lightning-bolt shaped incut that is clearly deliberate. Size: 5.95" W x 10.25" H (15.1 cm x 26 cm).

A nearly identical example was sold by the same consignor at Christie\'s on December 9, 2015 (Lot 105) for USD $8,750.
