Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A wearable pendant crafted from a thick sheet of 93% sterling silver, shaped as Mjolnir, the legendary hammer of Thor, the Norse god of thunder. The neck curls inward to form a suspension loop, while the obverse is adorned with stamped circular and triangular motifs. Mjolnir pendants were worn as religious amulets throughout the Viking era, symbolizing Thor's protection, strength, and power over storms and battles. Typically made of silver and suspended on silver chains, these amulets were worn by both men and women as powerful emblems of pagan faith and identity, especially during the spread of Christianity across Scandinavia. Some even survived into the Christian era, representing a blend of old and new beliefs. Size: 1.23" L x 0.89" W (3.1 cm x 2.3 cm); silver quality: 93.5%; weight: 6.6 grams

Provenance: private London, UK collection, acquired in Vienna, Austria, before 2000
