Description:

Ancient Near East / Western Asia, Anatolia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A beautiful and mysterious polished stone bowl, made from hard grey-green stone with sparkling inclusions. The rim is flared and three low handles emerge at regular intervals from the shoulder, each drilled through to create a narrow perforation. Polished stone bowls are common grave goods from this time period, and they often seem to have been left in the tomb with a food offering. For example, an elite tomb excavated from the ancient city of Sam'al in southeastern Turkey contained a stele depicting the tomb's inhabitant seated at a table laden with food, symbolizing the riches he would have in the afterlife. In front of the stele, archaeologists found several polished stone bowls and the remains of food. Size: 4.4" W x 3" H (11.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
