Description:

Ancient Eastern Mediterranean / Western Anatolia, Phoenicia, ca. 10th to 8th century BCE. A hollow, votive terracotta figure of a woman holding a bird low across her stomach. Her lower body is conical and without detail; the bird she holds is similarly undetailed, just a simple form, as are her arms. Her hair is separated into twin wide plaits that hang over her shoulders and flank the bird. Her face is the most detailed section of the figure, with wide eyes and a large nose and mouth. Size: 2.3" L x 2.2" W x 6.6" H (5.8 cm x 5.6 cm x 16.8 cm)

The Phoenicians were a collection of highly independent maritime-trading city-states who we know about mainly the Greeks; the name Phoenician was given to these people by the Greeks. Figures like this one may have been made to represent goddesses, used in domestic shrines and or given as offerings at temples.
