Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumerian, ca. 2500 to 2200 BCE. A charming pair of hand-carved stone amulets: a reclining bull and a standing quadruped. Sculpted from white stone, the bull lays on its side with legs bent and head turned towards the viewer to display annular eyes that likely previously held inlays. Alternatively, the other animal is formed from a pale red stone and stands upon short legs as its forward-facing head presenting a tapered snout and a pair of pointed ears or horns. Each amulet features a drill hole in its back for suspension. Size of largest (bull): 0.9" L x 0.6" W (2.3 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Idledale, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990
