Description:

Ancient Near East, The Levant, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A hand-built terracotta bull of a sizable form with a bulky body, a raised head, and a nubbin tail. The majestic animal raises its head to reveal a pair of discoid eyes and a tapered snout beneath the bases of both horns. This example was perhaps used as a child's toy, though it may have also been a votive meant as a temple offering. Size: 8.375" L x 3.25" W x 4.7" H (21.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 11.9 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Loss to all 4 legs and both horns. Stabilization to lengthy fissure across back, with light adhesive residue along break lines. Nicks, chips, and abrasions to body, tail, and head, with fading to surface pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
