Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A wonderful, mold-formed pottery statuette of Astarte, the ancient Sumerian goddess associated with fertility, sexuality, and war. Also known as Ashtoreth and Ishtar in parts of Mesopotamia, Astarte presents standing nude atop an integral rectangular plinth while clasping both hands beneath her ample breasts and in front of her womb. Her almond-shaped eyes peer outward from behind a prominent nose, and her head is topped with a minimalist coiffure and a headdress bearing a high collar. Size: 1.1" W x 4.375" H (2.8 cm x 11.1 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repaired from two large pieces across waist, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to plinth, legs, body, and head, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
