Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A lovely necklace composed of 6 chalky white shell fragments, a central conical faience pendant, and dozens of smaller beads composed of faience and glass. The beads exhibit a variety of blue, white, green, and tan hues, with some of the glass beads displaying vibrant iridescence across their surfaces. The terminals meet via a modern gold-filled barrel clasp. A beautiful and wearable accessory! Size (necklace): 17.625" L (44.8 cm); size (largest bead): 0.75" W x 0.875" H (1.9 cm x 2.2 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Queens, New York, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s

  • Condition: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Beads are ancient while string and gold-filled components are modern. Small nicks and minor abrasions to some beads, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice iridescence on some glass beads.
