Description:

Sumer, modern-day Iraq, ca. second half of third millennium BCE. This is a beautiful example of a cast bronze pick with a sophisticated design to the tip and a flared back behind a rimmed socket. In my opinion, this is one of the nicest pieces that we have from the Piscopo Collection. We do not know if this pickaxe was used as a tool or was symbolic, but we do know that these are some of the earliest kinds of objects from Mesopotamian excavations. The beauty of this particular piece is enhanced by the blue tinge to its patina, which is indicative of a higher percentage of tin in its alloy. Size: 7.25" L x 3.6" W (18.4 cm x 9.1 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
