Description:

Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (or Oxus Civilization), late 3rd to early 2nd millennia BCE. This is a lead mace head with an interesting clover-shaped incised design on its four sides and a large socket. In the ancient world, lead was a biproduct of extracting silver form the ancient process of cupellation, first known from the Near East in the 4th or 3rd millennium BCE. Lead itself was then smelted and used to make items like this one. Similar items, auctioned by Christie's, included a basalt cylindrical shaft. Size: 3.2" L x 3.2" W x 3.75" H (8.1 cm x 8.1 cm x 9.5 cm).
