Description:

Native American, North America, east central Arizona and west central New Mexico, Anasazi culture, Early/Late Pueblo III, ca. 1150-1300 CE. The Anasazi developed from an earlier culture known as the Oshara, comprised of small nomadic bands that inhabited mountainous regions of the southwest. The introduction of pottery, most likely from the south, marked the inception of the culture we call the Anasazi. Departing from the nomadic existence, they like the Mogollon lived in pithouses arranged in groups around a large ceremonial room called a kiva. Anasazi pottery has traditionally been made of white or gray clay and constructed using the coil and scrape technique. Early examples were decorated with black geometric designs; later polychrome programs emerged. This specific form of Anasazi pottery is known as St. Johns Black-on-Red ware. It is essentially the equivalent of Tularosa Black-on-White that has been fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to achieve a red ground. The exterior has added decoration executed in white paint making for a rich and varying decorative program. 3"T x 5-3/4"D Provenance: Ex-private Scottsdale, AZ Collection found on private land in the 1940s.
