Description:

Native American, North America, east central Arizona and west central New Mexico, Anasazi culture, ca. 1030-1125 CE. The Anasazi developed from an earlier culture known as the Oshara, comprised of small nomadic bands that inhabited mountainous regions of the southwest. The introduction of pottery, most likely from the south, marked the inception of the culture we call the Anasazi. Departing from the nomadic existence, they, like the Mogollon, lived in pithouses arranged in groups around a large ceremonial room called a kiva. Anasazi pottery has traditionally been made of white or gray clay and constructed via the coil and scrape technique. Early examples were decorated with black geometric designs; later polychrome programs emerged. Gallup black on white ceramics created during the late Pueblo II period possess designs similar to those found in the Chaco area. However, the Gallup style departs from that of the Chaco in that Gallup hatching is wider spaced than Chaco, and the framing lines tend to be approximately the same size. Some examples represent ancestral forms to Hopi pottery. 4"H x 7-1/2"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Hagen Collection, acquired in the 1940s, found on private land.
