Description:

South Asia, Sri Lanka, ca. early 20th century CE. A Sinhalese palm leaf book known as an ola that contains over 50 leaves bound by cotton cords between a pair of wood slat covers. The drawstring binding allows the reader to tightly bind and sandwich the palm leaves together when in storage to keep their flattened shape. The writing is in Sinhalese and interestingly is made by impressing a nub tip into the page, a black ink made from charcoal and resin was then rubbed into the impressions - which is why the peripheries of these leaves are stained and dark. These manuscripts were usually made for use in Buddhist monasteries. Size: 13.5" L x 1.75" W x 1.75" H (34.3 cm x 4.4 cm x 4.4 cm)
