Van Joseph (First Nations / Canadian, Squamish, b. 1964). "Chiefs Mask Eagle / Frog" cedar wood mask w/ animal hide and metal wire, n.d. Signed with title, culture, location, and the number "72" on verso. A wonderful wood carving of a chief's mask by Squamish artist Van Joseph, hand-painted in hues of persimmon, turquoise, crimson, and black. Strips of cedar bard are strapped to the tops and sides of the head via animal hide and metal wire, forming a coiffure. The stylized vizard features an eagle head on the forehead, just above the heavy brow and slender eyes. The upside-down head of a turtle embellishes his chin. The mask is supported by a wooden post set in a painted custom stand. A Size: 4.8" W x 19.1" H (12.2 cm x 48.5 cm)

Van Joseph is a member of the Squamish Nation. He was born in 1964 in New Westminster and grew up in Surrey and North Vancouver, British Columbia. When Van moved to North Vancouver at the age of 15 he was inspired by Squamish Nation Artists and began to carve under Marvin Baker, later being taught by Floyd Joseph and Paul Joseph. He mainly concentrates on his wood carvings but has also done paintings and carvings in argillite. His works include masks, totem poles, bowls and plaques. One of his sculptures can be found in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian under catalog number 25/3752.

  • Condition: Signed with title, culture, location, and the number "72" on verso. Some fraying and bending to bark, and a few small nicks to mask and scuffs to base. Post is removable from stand and is slightly loose. Otherwise, intact and excellent. Brilliant pigments.
