Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Apache, ca.1930s CE. A twined / woven basket made of devil's claw, sumac, willow, or other native plants, with lengthy hide cords attached to metal jingle cones. The melodic sound of the cones tinkling is unavoidable when carrying this basket - and though burden baskets were carried by women while trekking with the chiming warning away snakes and/or other dangerous wildlife, the amount of jingle cones here suggests this may have had a ceremonial purpose. Girls had a special Sunrise Ceremony that marked their passage into womanhood, the burden baskets were filled with food and gifts during the four-day event, and the girls would wear the baskets during dances. Size: 14" Diameter x 10" H (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
